“This is an honor for Topsail Beach,” said Michael Rose, town manager. “Our town officials, BIS Committee and residents have worked hard on Topsail Beach’s nourishment program.”
“This is a benchmark project,” said Chris Gibson, the president of TI Coastal. As the town’s engineering contractor, Mr. Gibson has worked with Topsail Beach for more than 4 years and played a key role in the nourishment project.
Topsail Beach’s re-nourishment is a unique project, said Mayor Howard Braxton. Topsail Beach’s project is the first to utilize legislation sponsored by state legislators Harry Brown, Chris Millis, and Bill Rabon.
Beach nourishment started back in 2003 when Topsail Beach leaders set aside 4 cents of every 1 one-hundredth of valuation for a beach fund. “In 2010 to 2011, we put 1 million cubic yards of sand on the beach,” said Julian Bone, Mayor Pro-Tem.
“To be selected as one of America’s best restored beaches is an honor for the entire town,” said Bone.
“As Americans flock to our nation’s coastline during the upcoming beach season, most don’t even realize they may be enjoying a restored beach,” said ASBPA President Tony Pratt. “Coastal communities have restored more than 370 beaches in the United States.”
The ASBPA, founded in 1926, is dedicated to preserving, protecting and enhancing our coasts by merging science and public policy.
According to ASBPA, few Americans understand what it takes to keep a beach special. ASBPA created the Best Restored Beach award as
a way of highlighting the value of restored beaches for their communities and nation.
