Located at 14542 US Hwy 17, in the Hampstead Station shopping plaza, Burney’s Sweets & More is owned by William and Milushka Reed. It’s a family franchise with the original Burney’s granddaughter working in Hampstead, as well as Milushka’s mother, Nora.
“I worked in the first Burney’s franchise in Clinton,” said Milushka, adding that she also worked in the Tar Hill location.
“This is something I love,” she said. “At home, I love to bake.”
“We moved here from Fayetteville two years ago,” she said.
So, bringing the two things to she loved – Burney’s and baking - to Hampstead just seemed like a good recipe.
“Burney’s Sweets and More is known for their croissants,” Milushka said. “Some people call them cro-nuts.”
Whatever the deep fried delicacies are called, they are attracting Pender County fans. The croissants are cream or fruit filled and lightly glazed.
“We used to drive to Clinton for these!” one fan told us.
Burney’s Sweets & More also serves breakfast sandwiches. Ham, bacon, sausage, egg, and cheese combinations are sold on croissants, biscuits, or Texas toast. At lunch they sell pimento cheese sandwiches and chicken salad sandwiches.
“I enjoy making biscuits,” said Milushka. “I also like making fresh bread, which we will offer in the future.”
“As we grow, we will expand our variety,” she said.
Burney’s Sweets & More also offers a variety of coffee, cappuccinos, frappes, and smoothies.
The shop also makes cheesecakes, pound cakes, layer cakes, pies, donuts, and long johns.
“We have cakes that can have piping and birthday wishes added,” said Milushka. “We can customize what we have.”
The Reeds said they have been busy since opening in mid-January. They are enjoying serving the region.
“We want our customers to feel comfortable when they order,” she said. “If a customer has a suggestion, we are open to menu suggestions.”
Burney’s Sweets & More of Hampstead is open Mondays through Fridays, 6 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturdays, 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. The family owned shop is closed on Sundays.
