Explore Penderlea Hike

Explore Penderlea with Eleanor Roosevelt

PENDERLEA- Join Eleanor Roosevelt and Pender County Tourism for the Year of the Trail hike on Sept. 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This family-friendly one-mile hike will explore the New Deal farm community of Penderlea. It will be led by the most famous visitor to Penderlea, Eleanor Roosevelt, who visited on behalf of her husband, President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

“This hike will start at Penderlea Homestead Museum,” said Pender County Tourism Director Tammy Proctor. “Hikes will start at 10 a.m. and continue through the morning.”

The hike will take visitors from the museum and then onward to community buildings such as the government building where homesteaders checked in and were assigned a home from a selection of up to four bedrooms. Visitors will also see the auditorium and gymnasium. Along the way, there will be samples of Teachey’s famous chicken-n-pastry, a favorite meal in Penderlea, antique cars, music, and more.

“The Ruritans are pleased to share the rich history along with a lot of fun as we welcome hikers of all ages to Penderlea,” said June Robbins, an educator and volunteer with the Ruritans.

“The hike is free,” said Proctor.

Hikers should bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and use sunscreen.

The Year of the Trail is a statewide celebration to introduce North Carolinians to state trails. Pender County and its partners are sponsoring one family-fun hike per month.

The next Year of the Trail hike is the Outlander Hike at Moores Creek National Battlefield, led by Jason Howell. It is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14. Wear your tartan and join us! The hike is free.
