The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, has released national and state economic data for 2023, confirming that outdoor recreation remains a powerful engine for the U.S. economy, job creation, and community growth.
According to the new government data, outdoor recreation generated $1.2 trillion in economic output, accounted for 2.3% of the U.S. GDP, and supported 5 million jobs—representing 3.1% of the nation’s workforce.
This marks the largest recorded contribution of outdoor recreation since the BEA began measuring the sector in 2012. Revised data in this year’s release also highlights a 36% growth in the outdoor recreation economy in real terms since 2012. Notably, these figures show that outdoor recreation contributes more to the U.S. economy than farming, mining, and utilities combined.
