Established on June 5, 1998, by Jean Beasley in memory of her daughter Karen, the center has been instrumental in marine turtle conservation. It operates primarily with the help of volunteers who manage daily operations and care for the turtles.
The Sea Turtle Hospital, a key component of the center, provides rehabilitation services for sick and injured sea turtles, primarily from North Carolina. The hospital mainly cares for three species: loggerheads, greens, and Kemp’s ridleys. As of December 18, 2024, the hospital was caring for 69 turtles in rehabilitation and one permanent resident.
The center also emphasizes public education to raise awareness about the threats sea turtles face and the importance of their conservation. It offers opportunities for students of biology, wildlife conservation, and veterinary medicine from around the world.
For those interested in visiting, the center is currently closed to the public until March 2025, with ticket sales beginning in January 2025. Reservations are required for visits.
The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center continues to play a vital role in the conservation of marine turtles through its rescue and rehabilitation efforts, public education initiatives, and support.
